A Visual Tradition - expressing history in Water colour
Samuel Onyilo Uloko’s water colour works can be described as a visual feast to the African spirit. The bright and vivid colour and the subjects reflect our very essences as a people, the conscious visual materialization of our folk tales, history and songs give a very rich historical and sociological depth to the works in this series. He said of his water colour paintings “I try to see how i can appropriate African forms and motifs as visual vocabularies to express my phantasies. I use diverse motifs which appeal to me on a very personal level, some these motifs have underlining cultural connotation that I don’t take into consideration, I also create motifs that suites creative conscience. I draw inspiration sometimes from Hausa, Yoruba motifs and various other ones from Africa.
